Messed with two google projects. O3D and Gears. Gears just got Firefox 3.5+ support and Safari 4.x support. O3D is a light rendering platform for browsers. Very powerful use of openGL cards. Ran it on the MPB. Runs nice definitely has the possibility to be the “next big thing” of graphics.
Graphics cards still are hard to exploit on servers for my case. ATI’s close to metal or whatever they call it is only on supported systems. Video systems are *JUST* starting to use the newer video processing chips in new computers. I’ve been wishing for a good way to exploit the gfx card or ship it off to Helios (Project) possibly if it meets their requests.
Mobile blogging is basically lengthened tweets. Really. They are. I’ve abandoned Facebook for Twitter recently in an effort to avoid annoyance. Hearing more and more people talking about TOS and EULAs in real conversation it’s a nice change after years of abuse.
Right now I’m working on moving my services to nginx the “fast” webserver. It’s hip. It’s also Russian. The hardest to move will be PHP apps, I really don’t know why PHP and Apache have become inseparable. Even in Fink (OSX) you can’t get php without apache, even php-cgi. So as much as I despise php I might have to learn how to properly deploy it mono-a-mono. Phusion Passenger is still pretty slick feels modern to deploy. I still miss the ability to use a “dumb” webhost without root powers but I guess its just that us sysadmins can’t relinquish power.
Going to be gone for all of Defcon’s antics. Probably will shut some services off just incase.

Fuck. I hate Microsoft but this Seadragon image zoom is too damn useful. I’d been looking for a way to render binary data as an image, I finally resorted to coping the first X bits of a .bmp file and dumping that header to a few files and converting them as to save space. Stitched them together in Gimp then uploaded to Infinite Canvas the only Seadragon implementation I could stand using. Zoom in all the way. I might make a OGG/MP4 video of how I liked to view it. I might try some more of this it was pretty fun to see the bits of data.

From a (secret) blog on an upcoming tracker…
I really don’t like Antelope. REALLY. It’s a shoddy php program that is licensed poorly. The legal issues surrounding the inclusion of TBdev (GPL) in a non-gpl license are impressive. They dodged a bullet with that one with the developer not interested to protect his rights. I’ll have you know, the code we’re developing our tracker on is GPL’d code. We plan on keeping it that way. Free and open. Mostly free.
Antelope supposedly has been released to the public. There have been no revisions or updates to this public version of Antelope. The main concern is that the public version contains flaws that the live version has patched and not passed on to the community (other sites run antelope.) The largest flaw with antelope is the backlash Where.dvd had succumb due to an improper release and a promise of an agpl’d code release. This obvious distrust and disdain for the software’s own users was its downfall.
Antelope’s DESIGN: the multi-faceted search is annoying. I want to know if an album sucks or not before I download it. Tell me where its been. I want to know more stats then the top 10 where is an ‘upcomming’ filter? Why can’t I create a new filter? This design is nothing short of a total copy of the previous design of old(e). There have only been subtle improvements in usability, uploading repetitiveness, and general acceptance.
This little rant is 100% biased and unfair. But so is any article of praise. –Chrysippus
PS: if you happen to have the misfortune of using that software, here’s a decent css for it.

If you’re reading this you probably know that paranoidlinux.org is down. That’s because the man who paid for our webhosting disappeared. We haven’t been able to contact him for a few months. It is assumed the hosting will not return and the domain will default. The project has relocated to savane/GNA.
https://gna.org/projects/paranoidlinux/ The new project location.
Hopefully we can develop some decent software then think about an OS. It’s too much effort to roll iso’s and waste programmer’s time. If you want to help or something, you cannot fly-by that does nothing. If you want to do something put your money where your mouth is. If you want to develop something, go out and make SELinux usable by anyone! If you want to change the world, you have to do something! You cannot offer us equipment then walk away. We cannot telepathically communicate with you. If you want to help please use our IRC or the GNA project.

A new piece on text manipulation. Fun Fun. Thanks to IRC for some source text. I donno how I like this idea of composition. If there’s a second one I think this could get me interested in design again.

1) Congressional Research Service (CRS) reports (Congress) — CRS uses taxpayer dollars to produce reports on public policy issues ranging from foreign affairs to agriculture to health care. All of the reports are posted online, but access is available only to congressional offices through an intranet system. Citizens can order paper copies of the reports through their Member of Congress, but only by mail. Moreover, the general public cannot search through past reports, and a comprehensive index of the reports is not available online. (Some Members have posted some CRS reports online.) In the CDT/OMB survey, the CRS reports were the category of documents most frequently listed sought after by researchers, students, librarians, government employees, and citizens alike.

This ought to be a great source for us all. Just wait until we actually use our taxes effectively

Setup a vanilla forum recently. It’s pretty nice. http://getvanilla.com/
Anything that doesn’t auto URL -> <a> is really annoying. WordPress and Vanilla do this. <Rage>
Another item of <RAGE> is the “add tab” button on Firefox. IF you use the 3.1 builds you know that it’s kind of annoying. In Trunk (3.2*) it GLOMPS your last tab stalking it. Following it. Creepy. Bugs have been filed against it but ick!
